Time: Friday May 6th, 1-2pm
Location: 50 Beale Street, 12th Floor, Rodnick Conference Room
Presented By: Elizabeth Harrington, 4th year UCSF medical student working with the UCSF/KEMRI collaboration on integrating family planning services into HIV care and treatment.
Elizabeth undertook this project as part of the Health Professions Education Pathway to Discovery at UCSF, a program offering coursework and mentorship in medical education. Her mentors were Drs. Sara Newmann and Amin Azzam. She will present her experience and findings from conducting an educational intervention with HIV care providers in 5 districts of Nyanza Province, Kenya. She worked with five Family AIDS Care and Education Services (FACES) family planning nurses to conduct “problem tree” workshops, focusing on identifying the causes and consequences of HIV and unintended pregnancies. The workshops, geared towards facilitating discussion among care providers about the social impact of unintended pregnancies, introduced participatory and reflective components into the training curriculum for FP-HIV integration. These workshops were done as a part of the family planning/HIV integration study led by Drs. Craig Cohen, Elizabeth Bukusi, Daniel Grossman, Sara Newmann, and others.
