Atkerson, Blake

Rising 2L
UC Hastings College of the Law

Blake worked with the Consortium as a Research Assistant to Jennifer Dunn on projects regarding forced cesarean sections in the United States and the current legal implications, as well as the role of midwifes in the U.S.He is currently a rising 2L student at UC Hastings College of the Law where he serves as President of the Native American Law Student Association and as the Symposium and Communications Editor for the Race and Poverty Law Journal. This summer he will work with the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) on impact litigation and disability rights policy. In the fall he will also work for Forman & Associates assisting with Indian Child Welfare Act cases and other Native American related legal issues.

Carlberg, Mallory

Mallory worked with the Consortium as a research assistant for Executive Director Jennifer Dunn on projects regarding medical malpractice fears and rising cesarean section rates in the U.S. She is currently a rising 2L at the University of Oklahoma College of Law where she is an officer for United Students, an LGBT advocacy group, and is co-founding a Law Students for Reproductive Justice chapter. 

DeLain, Megan

Consortium Graduate Research Fellow

Megan has been working with Jennifer Dunn on women’s health issues, focusing forced obstetrical interventions. She is also assisting in research on regulatory responses to non-communicable diseases. Megan is a 2011 graduate of UC Hastings and a 2008 graduate of UC Davis. 

Dumais, Jackie

As an intern to Jennifer Dunn, Jackie assisted with the composition of web resources regarding health reform and federal regulation of research involving human subjects.  She is a second year J.D. candidate at UC Hastings, where she plans to concentrate her studies in health law and intellectual property.  Prior to attending law school, Jackie obtained a B.A. in Molecular Biology from UC Berkeley and went on to work in genetic research and pharmaceutical development.  She hopes to continue working on issues related to health care and research in the San Francisco Bay Area, which she is proud to call her home.

Dunn, Meghan

Meghan was assigned to the Elder Financial Abuse Collaboration researching pertinent elder financial abuse cases and literature to help create a recommendation to better serve victims of elder financial abuse in San Francisco. Meghan graduated from UC Hastings in May 2011 and was happy to be working with the Consortium! As of November, Meghan joined UCSF as a post-doctoral Fellow. She and another Hastings graduate will be working on analyzing, organizing and possibly re-drafting UCSF research policies. Meghan is excited for this new opportunity and credits the UCSF/ UC Hastings Consortium on Law, Science, and Health Policy with providing her the necessary background to smoothly transition into this new position!

Aishwarya assisted with the Forced Obstetrics Research Collaboration. She is now Project Manager for Confluence, a health intelligence firm in San Francisco.

Koplowicz, Jordan

Consultant

Jordan was an independent consultant who was retained by the Consortium for technical consulting. This website has been his largest project to date. Jordan bridges the law-technology divide as a licensed attorney and experienced web designer.  As a student at Hastings, Jordan won multiple awards for his paper on biotechnology patent prosecution.  He also wrote a paper on digital intellectual property piracy.  Prior to law school, Jordan worked for the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and the Shannon-Loh Lab at UCSF.
Jordan also has a long record of public interest work, including CALPIRG in both California and Washington, D.C., and the UCSF Center for Tobacco Control, Research and Education.  Jordan also co-sponsored an anti-smoking proposition for the California ballot.

Claire's research focused how the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act and state genetic anti discrimination laws apply to veterans. She is a recent graduate of UC Hastings and received a Concentration in Law and Health Sciences. Make sure to check out her blog about health care reform!
 

McCaman, Liz

Liz's summer projects included researching the legal, ethical, and medical issues surrounding treatment of extremely premature neonates.  She conducted research on consent to abortion for mentally incompetent women for the Medical-Legal Handbook on Abortion Care in California.  Liz is currently a rising 2L at UC Hastings College of the Law, and spends her free time as a volunteer at the Women's Option Center in San Francisco General Hospital.  She graduated magna cum laude from Loyola Marymount University with a B.A. in Political Science in 2010.

Jennifer assisted with the Medical-Legal Handbook on Abortion Care in California.  She is now the Health Policy Director for Genentech.

Price, Nicholson

Nicholson Price
Visiting Consortium Scholar

Nicholson Price works at the intersection of science and the law, studying both the impact of law on the conduct of scientific research and the impact of new scientific developments on the law.  He received his A.B. in Biological Sciences in 2004 from Harvard College and his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences in 2010 from Columbia University, where he used datamining techniques to evaluate protein properties influencing protein expression, solubility, and propensity to crystallize in structure-determination efforts.  He received his J.D. in 2011 from Columbia Law School, where he was a James Kent Scholar every year in residence, won the Charles Bathgate Beck Prize in Property, and served for three years as Submissions Editor of the Columbia Science and Technology Law Review.  His writing has appeared in that journal, the Insurance Law Bulletin, and Nature Biotechnology.  He is currently also clerking for Judge Carlos T. Bea on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Sanders, Desa

After graduating from UC Hastings, Desa assisted with the advance healthcare research collaboration which led to the publication of “Lost in Translation: The Unintended Consequences of Advance Directive Law on Clinical Care” in the Annals of Internal Medicine medical journal.  Desa is currently an Associate Angelo, Kilday & Kilduff, LLP in Sacramento, California and works to defend public entities in a variety of areas including labor and employment, constitutional, and civil rights litigation.  She volunteers with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and is an advocate for increased autism awareness and research.

While working as a Law & Policy Analyst at UCSF’s ANSIRH, Erin assisted with the Medical-Legal Handbook on Abortion Care in California. She is now counsel for Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California.

Shaham, Yaelle

Yaelle is a rising 3L at Hastings pursuing a concentration in Law and Health Sciences.  She graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.S. in Society and Environment, with a special emphasis in Environmental Justice and Development.  Before attending law school, Yaelle worked for the Pesticide Action Network of North America (PANNA) and as an office manager for a private medical practice.  She collaborated with Sarah Hooper on the San Francisco Elder Financial Abuse Collaboration.

Weisner, Julia

Julia Weisner served as the first Projects Assistant with the Consortium. She is an Oakland native who returned to the Bay Area after completing her B.A. in Sociology and Spanish at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2008. At UCLA she served as Executive Director for Amigos de UCLA, a volunteer, student-run after school program in the Los Angeles Unified School District. She also has been a substitute teacher through the organization BayTeachers for charter and private schools throughout the Bay Area. In early 2009 she began working with the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office as a Fellow with the Reentry Council of San Francisco with a focus on prevention and reentry services. Before joining the Consortium, she worked for two years with the Public Defender’s Office as a Program Coordinator for Bayview MAGIC, a community collaborative serving Bayview Hunters Point. Julia’s interests and future areas of study include public health law and policy with a focus on health advocacy, education, and community development. She is now a student at UC Hastings within the Health Sciences Concentration, and plans to apply to Masters in Public Health programs.
